Week of 25 Apr — 1 May

1. What did you do this past week?
This past week I have just been working on Project 5, Life, and homework/assignments for Data Mining. I have also started studying for finals. Although I haven’t studied much yet, I do have a Cloud Computing exam coming up next week.

2. What’s in your way?
My wrist is recovering well, but it hasn’t completely healed yet. I’m glad it doesn’t affect my ability to type with a keyboard though. I’m just taking it lighter at the gym for now and doing more cardio and walking instead.

3. What will you do next week?
Next week I will finish up Project 5 and turn it in, as well as my Data Mining assignment. I have an exam in Cloud Computing that I will study for and take as well. Then I will shift my priorities to studying for my other final exams.

4. What did you think of Paper #14: The New Methodology?
I’ve been a part of an Agile/Scrum team before at my internship last summer, so I was able to relate to this paper well. It is interesting how when creating a methodology for software development, the “designing” includes everything up until automation or “construction”, and the iterations help control unpredictability.

5. What was your experience of Life, smart pointers, and virtual? (this question will vary, week to week)
I had seen some Game of Life rulesets on a game called Powder Toy before, so I was familiar with how it worked going into the final project. With smart pointers and the virtual keyword, it was interesting to see how C++ works compared to Java.

6. What made you happy this week?
I celebrated my 21st birthday this week with my friends. I also hiked on the Hill of Life trail at the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and I saw Sculpture Falls. The rain cleared up at just the right time and it was pretty fun.

7. What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My pick of the week is related to our final project, Life. I mentioned earlier that I first learned about Game of Life through Powder Toy, which is a physics sandbox/simulation game: https://powdertoy.co.uk/. I created several interesting “spaceships” with the different rulesets, which have names. Here are the different species/rulesets: https://powdertoy.co.uk/Wiki/W/Element:LIFE.html.
